Sedation in critically ill patients.

چکیده
Sedation in the intensive care unit (ICU) is a topic that has been frequently researched, and debate still exists as to what are the best sedative agents for critically ill patients. There is increasing interest in sleep and circadian rhythm disturbances in the ICU and how they may impact on outcomes. In addition to patient-related and ICU environmental factors that likely impact sleep and circadian rhythm in the ICU, sedative and analgesic medications may also play a role.

Early sedation use in critically ill mechanically ventilated patients: when less is really more
Over the last 10 years, there has been an explosion of literature surrounding sedation management for critically ill patients. The clinical target has moved away from an unconscious and immobile patient toward a goal of light or no sedation and early mobility. The move away from terms such as 'sedation' toward more patient-centered and symptom-based control of pain, anxiety, and agitation makes...
متن کاملInadequate Sedation During Therapeutic Paralysis: Use of Bispectral Index in Critically Ill Patients
BACKGROUND Patients receiving therapeutic paralysis may experience inadequate sedation due to intrinsic limitations of behavioral sedation assessment. Bispectral index (BIS™) provides an objective measure of sedation; however, the role of BIS™ is not well defined in intensive care unit (ICU) patients on neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBA). OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to delineate the...

This review will focus on the sedation strategies for critically ill patients and the pharmacology of commonly used sedative agents. The role of neuromuscular blocking agents in the ICU will be examined and the pharm...
متن کاملUsing Iron-Chelating Agents in Critically Ill Patients with Iron Overload. Fact or Fiction?
Recently, some evidence has shown that the failure of iron homeostasis may occur in critically ill patients and can lead to iron overload. Elevated ferritin levels as a body iron burden index in critically ill patients may be associated with depressed level of consciousness and greater mortality. However, the necessity of using iron-chelating agents in clinical situation is still unknown for th...
